Tiverton beats Toll Gate 1-0 in semifinals

The Tiverton field hockey team beat Toll Gate 1-0 in overtime during the Division 3 semifinals at Cumberland on Tuesday night. The 12-3 Tigers move on to face 9-5-1 Chariho/Prout Co-op in the championship at Roger Williams University on Sunday night.

“They’re a strong team,” said Tigers head coach Mikella DaSilva of the Chargers. “They have had a great season like us.”

Tiverton played a pair of close games with the Chariho/Prout Co-op during the regular season. They beat the Chargers 1-0 on Sept. 24, and 2-1 in overtime on Oct. 15.

“I’m excited to play a good field hockey game and hopefully we can come out with the win,” said Coach DaSilva.

Macfarlane scores game winner

Tiverton junior forward Ava Macfarlane scored the game’s lone goal two minutes into overtime during their semifinals win over Toll Gate. The Tigers played well offensively and defensively and finally took advantage of an opportunity in overtime according to head coach Mikella DaSilva.

“Toll Gate had some opportunities during regulation, but our defense was solid and came up strong. We were able to shut down their advances in the circle,” she said.

Goalkeeper Cordeila Awad made three saves for the Tigers. The Toll Gate defense also played well according to Coach DaSilva.

“Our offense had a difficult time scoring on the Titans in regulation. Even after countless offensive corners and shots on goal, we couldn’t capitalize,” she said.

With both teams defending their net well, regulation ended in a scoreless tie. Two minutes into the overtime period, the Tigers were awarded a penalty corner. Sophomore midfielder Abby Gilfillen passed the ball in to Macfarlane and she scored the game winner.

“Ava lifted her shot by the keeper into the corner of the goal,” Coach DaSilva said.

The Tigers converged on Macfarlane after the goal to celebrate the victory.
